Musical Instruments

Another exciting thing we did recently was visit a music shop. Interestingly, there were only a few Indian instruments, but the most popular was the harmonium. Often used in chants, the harmonium looks like a miniature piano attached to an accordion on the back. It sounds like a combination of an accordion and a drone instrument like a dulcimer. One of our interns bought one for his meditation, so I’m sure I’ll be sick of the sound of a harmonium by the end of July…
They also had Indian flutes, which look like a snake mid-rat-eating, and sound sort of like a recorder, as it also has the little holes. I forget what they are actually called though.
They also had one very sad looking sitar, a guitar- or dulcimer- like instrument played almost all the time in Indian classical music.
The Western instruments they carried were also interesting, as they consisted of guitars and violins (I think, exclusively).
And the shop was interesting as well: it’s not rare to see gurus and Jesus sharing the same space, you know.
