Today I finally got to teach at the village school (and I say finally because working at the school in the city seemed to be a terrible experience). Allow me to preface this post with the fact that the day was incredibly pleasant, minus the fact that the bus left without us in the morning so we had to take an auto there…
Classes:
KG-1- They were super –adorable, so I taught them hot cross buns with fun motions. I got pretty creative. “Hot”- fan yourself (augmented by the fact that there’s normally no power in Betawar), “Cross” – Make your arms into a cross in front of you, “buns” pretend you’re holding a bun, “one-a-penny” hold one finger up, “two-a-penny” hold two fingers up. We also did some fun ‘head, shoulders, knees and toes’ and a rhythm copying game.
2-3 – So much fun! We learned about pitch by being different heights, volume by raising our hands, and short and long notes by using our hands. We also did some fun rhythm clapping stuff, which generally small children seem to like. We also did some raging ‘head, shoulders, knees, and toes,” which is a big hit.
7- My most disappointing class, and my last. They just weren’t excited to learn. I hope to find something that sparks their interest soon though. My goal is to expose them to Western music. I need to figure out the whole situation on power there though…
Fun games:
During lunch I played badminton with a girl named Pridhi. My lawn badminton skills are definitely going to improve this summer.
We played soccer (aka football here) with some kids. It was really fun, but sort of gross because of the amount of sweat I had going on…
